Sylvan Lake News Story, January 15, 2010
Fundraisers – Anthony Robinson, Sean McIntyre and Zachary Morgan were among the volunteers unloading bottles at the recycle depot during a bottle drive organized by Sylvan Lake’s Lakeview Optimist Club to raise money towards a skateboard park in the community. The club held two fundraisers Saturday. One was the bottle drive with the help of Sylvan Lake Skateboarding Club. They had about 10 volunteers from the skate park group help them with the drive. The second was a morning at the movies. Silver Lake Cinema donated a viewing of Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 with 100 per cent of ticket sales and a portion of concession sales donated to the club. ‘Our theatre fundraiser was a huge success and sold out,” said vice president Megan Chernoff, “We sold 195 tickets (at $5 each).” She added, “Our total for the weekend came it at $2,000 raised. All in all, an amazing first fundraising attempt.”
Continue Reading »Snow is on the ground and temperatures still below zero (recently a lot below zero) but skateparks are on the minds of a lot of Sylvan locals this January. “How’s that?” you ask? Well, if you don’t believe me consider this. Today Sylvan’s own Lakeview Optimist club held TWO fundraisers to raise money for the new skatepark project. First, they sold out the Silver Lake Cinema for a showing of “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”, then they had four or five trucks loaded with volunteers canvassing town collecting bottles in a post-new years bottle drive. While the final results won’t be known for a week or so, the morning at the movies looks to have raised about $800 and while the value of the dozen or so large bags (4’ cubes) of bottles and cans is impossible to estimate, the bottle drive looks to have raised a fair chunk of change too. The Sylvan Lake Skateboard Association thanks the Lakeview Optimist Club, the Silver Lake Cinema, Incline Industries, and all of the volunteers who helped with these events. What an awesome way to start the new year for Sylvan skaters and BMX’ers!
More fundraising events are planned as we are a log way from our goal of $50 000. Community support for the skatepark is a critical factor to getting it built so Sylvan skaters, BMX’ers, their families and supporters are all needed to help make it happen. See you at the next event!!
